Installation of Recessed DownlightsInstallation of Recessed DownlightsWhen they are installed correctly recessed down lights will give no problems. Most fittings even those with square faceplates are inserted into round holes cut into the ceiling. As long as the centres of the holes are in line the lights will end up in a straight line. The lights are held in place by spring clips which hold the fitting securely. Some lights do need a rectangular cut out and care is needed to align the same edge of the hole to make sure that the lights end up in a straight line. The full Regulations that apply to the installation of downlights in New Zealand can be found on the Energy Safety Services website . The following extracts will give a brief overview of what is required and your Registered Electrician will be familiar with the Regulations. ![]() ![]() These clearances for halogen lights can be reduced by the use of heat cans and improved design but the manufacturers instructions should be followed. The downlights are classified according to how much they open up the ceiling space. If the light fitting leaves less than 5% of the cut out open to air flow when they are installed the light fitting is classed as closed (C). The manufacturer will specify how close it is safe to have the insulation and this is indicated bu (S). If it is safe to have the insulation abutted the fitting is classed as (A). Most downlights will have CA or CS indicated on them, open fittings are not that common. If you have read this far you will be pleased to know that the manufacturers have worked all this out for you.
